The Columbia Law Review is a prestigious scholarly journal published by the Columbia Law School. Established in 1901, it is one of the oldest and most influential law reviews in the United States. The journal is managed and edited by students at Columbia Law School, and it publishes articles, essays, and book reviews on a wide range of legal topics.
History
The Columbia Law Review was founded in 1901 by a group of students and faculty at Columbia Law School. It was one of the first student-edited law reviews in the country, following the Harvard Law Review, which was established in 1887. The journal quickly gained a reputation for publishing high-quality legal scholarship and has maintained its status as a leading law review ever since.
Editorial Process
The Columbia Law Review is edited by students at Columbia Law School. Each year, a new group of second-year law students is selected to join the editorial board through a competitive process that includes a writing competition and an evaluation of academic performance. The editorial board is responsible for selecting articles for publication, editing submissions, and managing the production of the journal.
Content
The Columbia Law Review publishes a variety of content, including:
- Articles: Scholarly articles written by professors, judges, and practitioners on a wide range of legal topics.
- Essays: Shorter pieces that provide commentary or analysis on current legal issues.
- Book Reviews: Reviews of recent books in the field of law.
The journal covers all areas of law, including constitutional law, criminal law, international law, and more.
Notable Alumni
Many prominent legal scholars, judges, and practitioners have served on the editorial board of the Columbia Law Review. Notable alumni include:
- Ruth Bader Ginsburg, former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States
- William O. Douglas, former Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States
- Michael I. Sovern, former President of Columbia University
Impact and Influence
