Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, opposite Playa del Carmen, and close to the Yucatán Channel. It is one of the ten municipalities (municipios) of the state of Quintana Roo. Cozumel is a popular tourist destination renowned for its scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities, featuring a rich marine life and vibrant coral reefs.

Geography

Cozumel is Mexico's largest Caribbean island, followed by Isla Mujeres. It lies approximately 10 miles (16 km) from the mainland and 12 miles (19 km) from Playa del Carmen. The island is about 30 miles (48 km) long and 9.9 miles (16 km) wide. The majority of the population lives in the town of San Miguel, which is located on the island's western shore.

The island's topography is relatively flat, with the highest point being less than 50 feet (15 m) above sea level. Cozumel's coastline is marked by white sandy beaches, mangroves, and lagoons. The interior of the island is covered with dense tropical foliage and scattered cenotes (natural freshwater pools).

History

The name Cozumel is derived from the Mayan words "Cuzam" (swallow) and "Lumil" (land of), translating to the land of the swallows. The island was a significant trade and religious center for the ancient Maya civilization. Notable Mayan sites on the island include San Gervasio, which was dedicated to the goddess Ixchel.

During the Spanish conquest of the Yucatán, Cozumel served as a staging point for expeditions into the mainland. The island's indigenous population suffered greatly from diseases brought by the Europeans, leading to a significant decline by the mid-16th century.

In the 20th century, Cozumel gained international attention as a premier scuba diving destination, thanks in part to the efforts of oceanographer Jacques Cousteau who documented the richness of the island's underwater life in the 1960s.

Economy

Tourism is the mainstay of Cozumel's economy, with a focus on water sports, diving, snorkeling, and fishing. The Cozumel splendour beetle and the Cozumel emerald (a species of hummingbird) are among the endemic species found only on the island.

The island is accessible by air through the Cozumel International Airport, which receives flights from major cities in Mexico and international destinations. Ferry services connect Cozumel with Playa del Carmen on the mainland, providing regular transport for both residents and tourists.

Culture

Cozumel's culture is a blend of Mayan heritage and Mexican traditions, with a significant influence from the various international tourists who visit the island. Annual events and festivals, such as the Cozumel Carnival, are celebrated with traditional music, dance, and food, showcasing the island's vibrant community spirit.
