History

Crass was formed in 1977 by Steve Ignorant and Penny Rimbaud in Epping, Essex. The band emerged from the punk rock scene but quickly developed a more complex and experimental sound, incorporating elements of art punk and experimental rock. They were known for their DIY ethic, producing their own records and distributing them through their own label, Crass Records.

Philosophy and Influence

Crass was heavily influenced by the anarchist philosophy and were vocal advocates for animal rights, feminism, and anti-war sentiments. Their lyrics often addressed issues such as consumerism, environmentalism, and anti-authoritarianism. The band is credited with helping to establish the anarcho-punk movement, which combined the raw energy of punk rock with a strong political message.
