Curly
Curly is a term often used to describe a type of hair texture that is naturally wavy or spiraled. Curly hair can range from loose waves to tight, springy curls. It is different from straight hair in its structure and the care it requires.
Characteristics
Curly hair is often dry and brittle as the oils produced by the scalp struggle to reach the ends of the hair due to the twists and turns of the curls. This can make it more prone to breakage and split ends. Curly hair also tends to be more porous, meaning it can easily absorb moisture from the air, leading to frizz.
Types of Curly Hair
There are several different types of curly hair, categorized by the tightness and shape of the curls. These include:
- Type 2 (Wavy): This hair type has a natural wave, with the 'S' shape forming throughout the hair. It can be further divided into 2A (loose waves), 2B (more defined waves), and 2C (wavy and a bit curly).
- Type 3 (Curly): This hair type has a definite curl pattern that forms spirals or ringlets. It can be further divided into 3A (loose curls), 3B (medium curls), and 3C (tight curls).
- Type 4 (Coily): This hair type has a tight curl pattern that can range from fine, thin curls to thick, wiry coils. It can be further divided into 4A (soft coils), 4B (Z-shaped coils), and 4C (tight kinks or coils).
Care and Maintenance
Caring for curly hair requires a different approach than straight hair. Some tips include:
- Using a sulfate-free shampoo to avoid stripping the hair of its natural oils.
- Applying a deep conditioner regularly to moisturize the hair.
- Using a wide-tooth comb or fingers to detangle the hair when it's wet.
- Avoiding heat styling tools as much as possible to prevent damage.
- Using products designed for curly hair, such as curl creams and gels.
