Cyanonilutamide

Cyanonilutamide (pronunciation: sy-an-oh-nil-uh-tam-ide) is a nonsteroidal antiandrogen (NSAA) that is used in the research for the treatment of prostate cancer. It is also known as ARN-509 and apalutamide.

Etymology

The term "Cyanonilutamide" is derived from the chemical structure of the compound. The prefix "cyano-" refers to the presence of a cyanide group in the molecule, while "nilutamide" is a reference to a similar antiandrogen drug, Nilutamide, from which Cyanonilutamide is derived.

Pharmacology

Cyanonilutamide acts as an antagonist of the androgen receptor, which is a type of nuclear receptor that is activated by binding of either of the androgenic hormones, testosterone, or dihydrotestosterone. By blocking the action of these hormones, Cyanonilutamide can slow the growth of prostate cancer cells.
