DMT (Dimethyltryptamine)

DMT (Dimethyltryptamine), pronounced /diː.emːˈtiː/, is a powerful psychedelic compound of the tryptamine family. It is a structural analog of serotonin and melatonin and a functional analog of other psychedelic tryptamines such as 4-AcO-DMT, 5-MeO-DMT, 5-HO-DMT, psilocybin, and psilocin.

Etymology

The term "DMT" is an abbreviation of its chemical name, Dimethyltryptamine. The prefix "Di-" is derived from Greek, meaning "two" or "double", referring to the two methyl groups attached to the nitrogen atom of the tryptamine molecule.

Usage and Effects

DMT is famous for its power and, relative to other psychedelics, its speed, typically lasting less than an hour. When smoked or vaporized, the onset of effects is very rapid (usually within 45 seconds), peaking for 5 to 20 minutes, and then rapidly subsiding. DMT can also be ingested in the form of the ancient psychedelic brew Ayahuasca, which is drunk and can last for several hours.

The effects of DMT are much more profound than higher doses of LSD or psilocybin. Users often report intense colors, geometric patterns, rapid scene shifts, complex and detailed imagery, direct contact with entities, and other life forms.
