Debate (pronunciation: /dɪˈbeɪt/) is a process that involves formal discussion on a particular topic. In a debate, opposing arguments are put forward to argue for opposing viewpoints.

Etymology

The term "debate" comes from the Old French debat, from debatre meaning "to fight", from de- "down, completely" (see de-) + batre "to beat" (see combat).
