Del Monte Foods traces its origins to the late 19th century. The company was originally part of the California Fruit Canners Association, which was formed in 1899. In 1916, the association merged with several other companies to form the California Packing Corporation, which marketed its products under the Del Monte brand.

In 1967, the company was renamed Del Monte Corporation and later became Del Monte Foods, Inc. Over the years, Del Monte has expanded its product lines and acquired several other food companies.
