Des Moines University (pronunciation: /dɪˈmɔɪn/ ) is a private, not-for-profit medical school located in Des Moines, Iowa. It is one of the oldest osteopathic schools in the United States, and has a rich history dating back to its founding in 1898.

Etymology

The name "Des Moines University" is derived from its location in the city of Des Moines, the capital of Iowa. The term "Des Moines" is a French phrase meaning "of the monks", referring to the Trappist monks who lived in the area in the 17th century.
