Desiccated Thyroid Extract

Desiccated thyroid extract (pronunciation: deh-SIK-uh-ted THY-roid EX-tract), also known as thyroid USP or natural thyroid, is a medication derived from the dried (desiccated) thyroid glands of animals, typically pigs.

Etymology

The term "desiccated" originates from the Latin desiccare, meaning "to dry up". The term "thyroid" comes from the Greek thyreoeides, meaning "shield-shaped", which describes the appearance of the thyroid gland in humans.

Usage

Desiccated thyroid extract is used to treat hypothyroidism, a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormones. It contains both thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), the two main hormones produced by the thyroid gland.
