It is used under the brand names Toctect and Zinecard to reduce heart damage in women taking doxorubicin for breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body. It is also used under the brand name Toctect to treat the toxic effects of a cancer drug leaking from a vein into surrounding tissues, causing tissue damage. Dexrazoxane hydrochloride is also being studied to treat some types of cancer. It is a type of cardioprotectant, a type of chemoprotectant, and a type of topoisomerase inhibitor. Dexrazoxane is the active ingredient in dexrazoxane hydrochloride
