Die Pharmazie (pronunciation: dee far-ma-tsee; etymology: from the Greek pharmakeia meaning "use of drugs, medicines, potions, or spells; poisoning, witchcraft; remedy, cure") is a term used to refer to the science and practice of preparing, preserving, compounding, and dispensing medical drugs. It also includes the study of the therapeutic and toxic effects of drugs on the human body.
History
The practice of pharmacy has been a vital part of healthcare since the earliest times. The first known pharmacy is believed to have been established in Baghdad during the Islamic Golden Age, as a response to the need of physicians to source ingredients for their medicines.
