Dietrich Mateschitz was born into a family of Croatian descent. He graduated from the Vienna University of Economics and Business in 1972, majoring in marketing.

  • In 1982, while traveling in Thailand, Mateschitz discovered the popular Thai energy drink Krating Daeng, which he saw as a potential product for the Western market. With the help of Chaleo Yoovidhya, the founder of Krating Daeng, Mateschitz adapted the drink to Western tastes and introduced it to Austria in 1987. The drink, which he named Red Bull, was an instant success and has since become one of the world's most popular energy drinks.
