Dirty Bomb

A Dirty Bomb (pronunciation: /ˈdɜːr.ti bɒm/), also known as a Radiological Dispersal Device (RDD), is a weapon designed to spread radioactive material over a large area. The term "dirty bomb" is primarily used by the media and is not a term used in the field of Radiation Protection or Nuclear Security.

Etymology

The term "dirty bomb" is believed to have originated from the potential for such a device to spread contamination over a wide area, thus "dirtying" it with radiation. The term is not related to the "clean" bombs used in nuclear warfare, which are designed to minimize fallout.

Description

A dirty bomb is not a "Nuclear Weapon" in the traditional sense. Instead, it is a type of "Radiological Weapon" that combines a conventional explosive, such as dynamite, with radioactive material. The primary purpose of a dirty bomb is not to cause destruction with the initial blast, but to create fear, panic, and chaos by spreading radioactive material over a wide area.
