Douglas H. Wheelock

Douglas H. Wheelock is an American astronaut and retired United States Army colonel. He is known for his contributions to space exploration and his service in the military.

Early Life and Education

Douglas H. Wheelock was born on May 5, 1960, in Binghamton, New York. He attended Windsor Central High School before enrolling at the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Science and Engineering. He later obtained a Master of Science degree in Aerospace Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology.

Military Career

After graduating from West Point, Wheelock was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. He served in various capacities, including as a combat aviation officer and a test pilot. He retired from the military with the rank of colonel.

NASA Career

Wheelock joined NASA in 1998 as part of the 17th group of astronaut candidates. He has participated in several space missions, including STS-120 and Expedition 24 to the International Space Station. During his time in space, he has conducted numerous spacewalks and has contributed to important research and experiments.

Awards and Honors

Throughout his career, Wheelock has received several awards and honors. These include the NASA Exceptional Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Personal Life

Wheelock is married and has two children. He enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking and skiing, and is an avid photographer.
