Douglas R. Oberhelman (born February 25, 1953) is an American businessman who served as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Caterpillar Inc., a leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines, and diesel-electric locomotives. Oberhelman held the position of CEO from 2010 to 2016 and was Chairman from 2010 to 2017.
Early Life and Education
Douglas Oberhelman was born in Peoria, Illinois, where Caterpillar Inc. is headquartered. He attended Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Finance in 1975. During his time at Millikin, Oberhelman was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
Career at Caterpillar
Oberhelman joined Caterpillar in 1975 as a corporate intern. Over the years, he held various positions in the company, gaining experience in multiple areas including finance, marketing, and operations. His leadership roles included serving as a Caterpillar vice president and chief financial officer.
CEO and Chairman
In 2010, Oberhelman was named CEO and Chairman of Caterpillar Inc., succeeding James W. Owens. During his tenure, Oberhelman focused on expanding Caterpillar's global presence and improving operational efficiency. He led the company through a period of significant growth and strategic acquisitions, including the purchase of Bucyrus International, a mining equipment manufacturer, in 2011.
Under Oberhelman's leadership, Caterpillar also emphasized sustainability and innovation, investing in technologies to improve the efficiency and environmental impact of its products.
Contributions and Legacy
Oberhelman is credited with steering Caterpillar through challenging economic times, including the global financial crisis and subsequent recovery. His strategic vision helped position Caterpillar as a leader in the global heavy equipment industry.
In addition to his role at Caterpillar, Oberhelman has been active in various industry and community organizations. He served as chairman of the National Association of Manufacturers and was a member of the Business Roundtable.
Retirement and Succession
Oberhelman announced his retirement as CEO in 2016, and he was succeeded by Jim Umpleby in January 2017. Oberhelman continued to serve as Chairman of the Board until March 2017, when he was succeeded by Dave Calhoun.
Personal Life
Douglas Oberhelman is married and has two children. He is known for his philanthropic efforts, particularly in the areas of education and community development. He has been involved with several charitable organizations and initiatives in the Peoria area.

Throughout his career, Oberhelman has received numerous awards and honors for his leadership and contributions to the industry. He was inducted into the Junior Achievement U.S. Business Hall of Fame in 2017.
