Download

Download (/daʊnˈloʊd/; from the English words "down" and "load") is a term used in Information Technology to describe the process of receiving data from a remote system, typically a server such as a web server, an FTP server, an email server, or other similar systems. This contrasts with uploading, where data is sent to a remote server.

Etymology

The term "download" comes from the English words "down" and "load". "Down" in this context refers to the direction of data flow, from the server to the user's device, while "load" refers to the data itself. The term was first used in this context in the early days of the Internet, when users would download files from a central server to their personal computers.
