Dunedin (pronounced duh-nee-din) is a city in the southern region of the South Island of New Zealand. It is the second-largest city in the South Island and the principal city of the Otago region.

Etymology

The name "Dunedin" comes from "Dùn Èideann", the Scottish Gaelic name for Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland. The city was founded by Scottish settlers, and its Scottish heritage is still very much in evidence today.

History

Dunedin was established by Scottish settlers in the mid-19th century. The discovery of gold in the Otago region in the 1860s led to a rapid influx of people and a period of great prosperity for the city. Dunedin became the economic and cultural hub of the Otago region, a status it has maintained to this day.

Healthcare in Dunedin

Dunedin is home to the Dunedin Public Hospital, one of the largest hospitals in New Zealand. The city is also the site of the University of Otago, which has a renowned medical school. The Dunedin School of Medicine is one of the leading medical schools in New Zealand and has made significant contributions to medical research and education in the country.
