EMBnet

EMBnet is a global network of bioinformatics centres, established in 1988. The primary goal of EMBnet is to meet the computational needs of life scientists. It provides services, tools, and resources to facilitate the analysis and interpretation of genomic, proteomic, and biochemical data.

History

EMBnet was established in 1988 as a collaborative project funded by the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). The initial aim was to create a network of bioinformatics centres to support the EMBL's nucleotide sequence database, EMBL-Bank. Over the years, EMBnet has evolved into a global network, extending its services and resources to the wider life science community.

Services

EMBnet provides a range of services to the life science community. These include:

• Database services: EMBnet hosts a variety of databases, including nucleotide and protein sequence databases, structure databases, and specialised databases. These databases are freely accessible to the scientific community.

• Software services: EMBnet provides a range of bioinformatics software tools for sequence analysis, structure analysis, and data visualisation. These tools are available through the EMBnet website and can be used online or downloaded for local use.

• Training services: EMBnet organises workshops, courses, and tutorials to train scientists in the use of bioinformatics tools and databases. These training events are held at various locations around the world.

Membership

Membership in EMBnet is open to any organisation that provides bioinformatics services to the life science community. Members are expected to contribute to the network's activities and to adhere to its principles of open access and data sharing.
