Elaine Esposito (pronounced E-lane Es-po-si-to) was an American woman known for spending 37 years in a coma, the longest recorded coma in history.

Etymology

The name Elaine is of Old French origin, derived from the name Helen, meaning 'bright, shining light'. Esposito is an Italian surname, meaning 'exposed' or 'abandoned'.

Biography

Elaine Esposito was born on December 3, 1934, in Chicago, Illinois. At the age of 6, she underwent an appendectomy, after which she fell into a coma from which she never woke up. She remained in this state until her death on November 25, 1978.

Coma

A coma is a state of prolonged unconsciousness that can be caused by a variety of factors, such as traumatic brain injury, stroke, brain tumor, or illnesses such as diabetes or infections.
