Ertapenem Sodium (pronunciation: er-ta-PEN-em SO-dee-um) is a carbapenem antibiotic used in the treatment of various bacterial infections. It is marketed under the brand name Invanz among others.

Etymology

The term "Ertapenem" is derived from elements of the names of earlier carbapenem antibiotics, such as imipenem and meropenem. The "er" is from meropenem, the "ta" is from imipenem, and the "penem" is a common suffix for this class of drugs.
