The Etna DOC (Denominazione di Origine Controllata) is a prestigious wine region located on the slopes of Mount Etna, an active volcano on the island of Sicily, Italy. Established in 1968, it is one of the oldest DOCs in Sicily and is renowned for its unique terroir and high-quality wines.

Geography and Climate

The Etna DOC region is situated on the northeastern side of Mount Etna, encompassing parts of the provinces of Catania and Messina. The vineyards are planted at altitudes ranging from 400 to 1,000 meters above sea level, benefiting from the volcanic soil, which is rich in minerals and provides excellent drainage.

The climate in the Etna DOC is characterized by warm summers and mild winters, with significant diurnal temperature variation. This climate, combined with the volcanic soil, contributes to the distinctive flavor profile of Etna wines.

Grape Varieties

The primary grape varieties grown in the Etna DOC are Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio for red wines, and Carricante and Catarratto for white wines.

Red Wines

Etna DOC red wines are predominantly made from Nerello Mascalese, often blended with a smaller percentage of Nerello Cappuccio. These wines are known for their elegance, complexity, and aging potential, with flavors of red berries, spices, and earthy notes.

White Wines

Etna DOC white wines are primarily made from Carricante, sometimes blended with Catarratto. These wines are appreciated for their crisp acidity, minerality, and citrus flavors.

The production of Etna DOC wines is strictly regulated to maintain quality. The regulations specify the permitted grape varieties, yield limits, and aging requirements. Red wines must be aged for a minimum of one year, while white wines can be released earlier.
