Eugenia pyriformis

From WikiMD's medical encyclopedia

Eugenia pyriformis, also known as Uvaia, is a tropical fruit tree species in the family Myrtaceae. It is native to Brazil, where it is commonly found in the Atlantic Forest biome. The tree produces a yellow-orange fruit that is edible and often used in the production of juices, wines, and jellies.

Description

The Eugenia pyriformis tree can reach up to 10 meters in height. It has a dense, rounded crown and smooth, peeling bark. The leaves are simple, opposite, and elliptical in shape. The flowers are white and fragrant, appearing in the spring.

The fruit of the Eugenia pyriformis is a berry that measures 3-4 cm in diameter. It is yellow-orange in color and has a sweet, acidic taste. The fruit contains a large, single seed.

Cultivation

Eugenia pyriformis is cultivated for its fruit in Brazil and other tropical regions. The tree prefers well-drained soil and full sun, but can tolerate partial shade. It is relatively resistant to pests and diseases, but can be affected by fungal infections if conditions are too wet.

The tree is propagated by seeds, which germinate in 30-60 days. The fruit is harvested when it is fully ripe and falls from the tree.

Uses

The fruit of the Eugenia pyriformis is consumed fresh and is also used to make juices, wines, and jellies. It is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, and has potential health benefits.

In traditional medicine, the leaves of the tree are used to treat digestive disorders and respiratory ailments.

Conservation

Eugenia pyriformis is considered a vulnerable species due to habitat loss and deforestation in its native range. Efforts are being made to conserve the species and its habitat.
