Exeter College is one of the constituent colleges of the University of Oxford in Oxford, England. It is the fourth oldest college of the university, having been founded in 1314 by Walter de Stapledon, the Bishop of Exeter and later Treasurer of England. The college is located on Turl Street in central Oxford, near the Bodleian Library and the Sheldonian Theatre.

History

Exeter College was originally founded to provide an education for clergy. It was initially known as Stapeldon Hall, named after its founder. The college's name was changed to Exeter College in 1566. Over the centuries, the college has grown and evolved, expanding its buildings and academic offerings.

Architecture

The college's main quadrangle, known as the Front Quadrangle, was constructed in the 17th century. The Chapel of Exeter College, designed by George Gilbert Scott, was completed in 1859 and is a notable example of Victorian Gothic architecture. The Rector's Lodgings and the Hall are also significant buildings within the college.
