The FA Cup, officially known as the Football Association Challenge Cup, is an annual knockout football competition in men's domestic English football. It is organized by the Football Association (FA) and is the oldest national football competition in the world, having commenced in the 1871–72 season. The competition is open to any eligible club down to Level 10 of the English football league system.
History
The FA Cup was first held in the 1871–72 season, and the inaugural tournament was won by Wanderers F.C., who defeated Royal Engineers A.F.C. 1–0 in the final. The competition has grown significantly since its inception, with over 700 clubs entering the tournament in recent years.
Format
The FA Cup is a knockout competition with pairings for each round drawn at random. The competition begins in August with the Extra Preliminary Round and continues through to the Final, which is traditionally held at Wembley Stadium in May. The competition is open to all clubs in the top ten levels of the English football league system, although clubs in the Premier League and EFL Championship enter at the Third Round Proper stage.
