Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse
Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is a survival horror video game developed by Tecmo and Grasshopper Manufacture. It is the fourth installment in the Fatal Frame series, known as Project Zero in Europe and Zero in Japan. The game was originally released for the Wii in Japan on July 31, 2008.
Gameplay
The gameplay of Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse follows the traditional mechanics of the series, focusing on exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat using the Camera Obscura, a special camera that can capture and pacify spirits. Players navigate through various haunted locations, uncovering the story through notes, diaries, and other items scattered throughout the environment.
Plot
The story is set on the fictional Rougetsu Island, where five girls were kidnapped by a mysterious figure. They were rescued but had no memory of the events. Ten years later, two of the girls have died under mysterious circumstances, prompting the remaining three to return to the island to uncover the truth behind their lost memories and the deaths of their friends.
Characters
- Ruka Minazuki - One of the protagonists who returns to Rougetsu Island to uncover her lost memories.
- Misaki Asou - Another protagonist and one of the kidnapped girls.
- Madoka Tsukimori - The third protagonist who joins Ruka and Misaki in their quest.
- Choushiro Kirishima - A private detective who was involved in the original rescue of the girls and returns to the island to investigate.
Development
Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse was developed by Tecmo in collaboration with Grasshopper Manufacture. The game was directed by Makoto Shibata and produced by Keisuke Kikuchi, both of whom have been involved in the series since its inception. The game's music was composed by Masafumi Takada.
Reception
The game received generally positive reviews in Japan, praised for its atmosphere, story, and use of the Wii's motion controls. However, it was criticized for its controls and lack of innovation compared to previous entries in the series. Despite its success in Japan, the game was never officially released outside of the country.
