Flag of Indonesia

The Flag of Indonesia, also known as Sang Saka Merah-Putih (The Sacred Red and White) or simply Merah-Putih (Red-White), is the national flag of the Republic of Indonesia. It consists of two horizontal bands of equal width, with the top being red and the bottom white. The design of the flag is simple yet profound, symbolizing courage and purity. The flag's dimensions are not fixed, but its width-to-length ratio is generally accepted to be 2:3.

History

The flag of Indonesia has a rich history that dates back to the country's struggle for independence from Dutch colonial rule. It was officially hoisted for the first time on 17 August 1945, marking Indonesia's declaration of independence. The red color symbolizes human blood, representing the human spirit and physical life, while the white color stands for purity and spirituality. This duality reflects the Indonesian philosophy of balance between the material and spiritual worlds.

The design of the flag is said to be inspired by the 13th-century Majapahit Empire's flag, which was also red and white. Throughout the years, the Merah-Putih has become a symbol of national pride and unity for the Indonesian people.

Legal Framework

The use and display of the Indonesian flag are governed by law. The Flag and Language Law, passed in 2009, sets out the guidelines for how and when the flag can be displayed, as well as the proper conduct towards the flag. This law emphasizes the flag's importance as a national symbol and mandates respect towards it.

Cultural Significance

The flag of Indonesia is not just a national symbol but also a source of pride and unity for the Indonesian people. It is prominently displayed during national holidays, such as Independence Day on 17 August, and other significant events. The flag also plays a crucial role in sports events, where it represents the country and its athletes on the international stage.

Controversies

Despite its unifying presence, the flag has been at the center of several controversies, particularly concerning incidents of flag desecration. Such acts are met with strong public and governmental condemnation, reflecting the deep respect and reverence the Indonesian people have for their national symbol.
