Gaston County, North Carolina

Gaston County, North Carolina (pronounced /ˈɡæstən/), is a county located in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It is part of the Charlotte Metropolitan Area, and its county seat is Gastonia.

Etymology

The county is named for William Gaston, member of the state supreme court.

Geography

Gaston County is located in the southwestern part of North Carolina. It is bordered by Mecklenburg County to the east, Cleveland County to the west, and Lincoln County to the north.

History

Gaston County was formed in 1846 from the southern part of Lincoln County. It was named for William Gaston, a jurist and United States Congressman from North Carolina.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, the population of Gaston County was 206,086. The racial makeup of the county was 81.5% White, 12.7% Black or African American, 1.3% Asian, 0.5% Native American, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.3% from other races, and 1.6% from two or more races. 6.8% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Economy

The economy of Gaston County is diverse, with a mix of manufacturing, healthcare, and service industries. Major employers include CaroMont Health, Daimler Trucks North America, and Parkdale Mills.

Education

The Gaston County Schools system is the ninth largest in North Carolina and includes 55 schools. Higher education is provided by Gaston College and Belmont Abbey College.

Transportation

Gaston County is served by Interstate 85, U.S. Route 74, and U.S. Route 321. The Gaston County Airport provides general aviation services.
