Geography of Réunion
== Geography of Réunion ==
Réunion is an island located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar and approximately 175 kilometers southwest of Mauritius, the nearest island. It is an overseas department and region of France. The island is known for its rugged terrain, volcanic activity, and diverse ecosystems.
Topography
Réunion's topography is dominated by two volcanic massifs. The Piton de la Fournaise is an active shield volcano located in the southeastern part of the island. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, with frequent eruptions. The highest point on the island is the Piton des Neiges, a dormant volcano that reaches an elevation of 3,070 meters. The central part of the island is characterized by three large cirques: Cirque de Salazie, Cirque de Cilaos, and Cirque de Mafate, which are large, natural amphitheaters formed by volcanic activity and erosion.
Climate
Réunion has a tropical climate with two distinct seasons. The hot and rainy season lasts from November to April, while the cooler and drier season extends from May to October. The island is subject to cyclones during the rainy season, which can cause significant damage and flooding.
Flora and Fauna
The island's diverse ecosystems range from coastal areas to high-altitude forests. Réunion is home to a variety of endemic species, including the Réunion harrier and the Réunion cuckooshrike. The island's flora includes a mix of tropical and subtropical plants, with many species found only on Réunion.
Hydrology
Réunion has numerous rivers and streams, many of which originate in the highlands and flow towards the coast. The Rivière des Marsouins and the Rivière des Roches are among the major rivers on the island. The island's water resources are crucial for both human consumption and agriculture.
Human Geography
The population of Réunion is concentrated along the coastal areas, with the largest city and administrative capital being Saint-Denis. Other significant towns include Saint-Pierre, Saint-Paul, and Le Tampon. The island's economy is primarily based on agriculture, tourism, and services.
