Ghana Cocoa Board
Ghana Cocoa Board (often referred to as COCOBOD) is a Ghanaian government-controlled institution that manages the running of the cocoa sector in Ghana. The board is responsible for buying all of Ghana's cocoa, processing it, and marketing it to international buyers. It also oversees the welfare of Ghana's cocoa farmers and the sustainability of the cocoa industry.
History
The Ghana Cocoa Board was established in 1947 during the colonial era. The British colonial government set up the board to control the cocoa industry, which was then the backbone of the Ghanaian economy. The board was initially called the West African Cocoa Control Board. After Ghana gained independence in 1957, the board was renamed the Ghana Cocoa Board.
Functions
The main functions of the Ghana Cocoa Board include:
- Buying all cocoa produced in Ghana
- Grading and sealing all cocoa ready for export
- Marketing and selling Ghana's cocoa to international buyers
- Overseeing the welfare of cocoa farmers
- Ensuring the sustainability of the cocoa industry
Structure
The Ghana Cocoa Board is headed by a Chief Executive, who is appointed by the President of Ghana. The board also includes representatives from the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana, and the Ghana Cocoa, Coffee and Sheanut Farmers Association.
Criticism
The Ghana Cocoa Board has faced criticism for its monopoly over the cocoa industry in Ghana. Critics argue that this monopoly stifens competition and innovation in the sector. However, the board maintains that its control over the industry is necessary to ensure the welfare of cocoa farmers and the sustainability of the industry.
