Gladesville Mental Hospital (Template:IPA-en), also known as Gladesville Hospital or Gladesville Psychiatric Hospital, is a historic psychiatric hospital located in Gladesville, New South Wales, Australia.
Etymology
The name "Gladesville" is derived from the suburb of Gladesville where the hospital is located. The term "mental hospital" is a traditional term for a hospital specializing in the treatment of mental illnesses.
History
Gladesville Mental Hospital was established in 1838 as the Tarban Creek Lunatic Asylum. It was the first purpose-built mental asylum in New South Wales. The hospital was renamed Gladesville Mental Hospital in 1915 and continued to operate as a psychiatric hospital until its closure in 1993.
Treatment
During its operation, Gladesville Mental Hospital provided treatment for a range of mental illnesses, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder. Treatment methods evolved over the hospital's history, reflecting changes in psychiatric theory and practice. These included psychotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy, and pharmacotherapy.
Legacy
Today, the site of the former Gladesville Mental Hospital is home to a number of community health services. The hospital's history is commemorated in the Gladesville Hospital Historic Site, which includes several of the hospital's original buildings.
