Glendale, Queens

Glendale is a neighborhood in the borough of Queens in New York City. It is bordered to the north by the Cemetery Belt and the neighborhoods of Ridgewood and Middle Village, to the east by Forest Park, to the south by the neighborhood of Woodhaven, and to the west by the neighborhood of Ridgewood and the Cemetery Belt.

History

Glendale was built on a swampy area previously known as Fresh Ponds. The area was later renamed Glendale by George S. Schott, who named it after his hometown of Glendale, Ohio. The neighborhood was developed in the late 19th century and early 20th century, with the construction of several row houses and detached homes.

Demographics

As of the 2010 Census, Glendale had a population of 32,496. The neighborhood is predominantly white, with a significant number of Hispanic, Asian, and African American residents.

Education

Glendale is served by the New York City Department of Education. The neighborhood has several public and private schools, including P.S. 113 Isaac Chauncey and P.S./I.S. 119 The Glendale.

Transportation

Glendale is served by the MTA's Q55 bus, which connects the neighborhood to the New York City Subway at the Myrtle–Wyckoff Avenues station.

Notable people

Several notable people have lived in or been associated with Glendale, including Mae West, who was born in the neighborhood, and Peter T. King, a former U.S. Representative.
