The Governor of Tennessee is the head of the executive branch of the U.S. state of Tennessee and the commander-in-chief of the state's military forces. The governor has a duty to enforce state laws and the power to either approve or veto bills passed by the Tennessee General Assembly, to convene the legislature, and to grant pardons, except in cases of impeachment.

History

The office of the Governor of Tennessee was established by the Tennessee Constitution in 1796. The first governor was John Sevier, who served from 1796 to 1801 and again from 1803 to 1809. The role and powers of the governor have evolved over time, with significant changes occurring through amendments to the state constitution.

Duties and Powers

The governor's responsibilities include:

  • Enforcing state laws
  • Approving or vetoing legislation
  • Convening the Tennessee General Assembly
  • Granting pardons and reprieves
  • Serving as the commander-in-chief of the state's military forces

The governor also has the power to appoint heads of state departments and agencies, as well as members of various boards and commissions.

Election and Term

The governor is elected by the citizens of Tennessee to a four-year term and can serve a maximum of two consecutive terms. The election is held during the midterm elections, which occur two years after each presidential election.

Residence

The official residence of the governor is the Tennessee Governor's Mansion, located in Nashville.
