Greene County, Georgia is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was approximately 18,324. The county seat is Greensboro, and the county is part of the Athens-Clarke County, GA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Greene County is known for its rich history, beautiful landscapes, and as a destination for golfers, notably because of the luxury resort, Reynolds Lake Oconee.

History

Greene County was established on February 3, 1786, and was named in honor of General Nathanael Greene, a hero of the American Revolutionary War. The county has a significant history that dates back to its early settlement and plays a role in the broader history of Georgia and the South. During the 19th century, it was primarily an agricultural area, with cotton as a major crop, relying heavily on slave labor before the Civil War.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 406 square miles, of which 387 square miles is land and 19 square miles (4.7%) is water. The majority of Greene County is located in the Oconee River sub-basin of the Altamaha River basin.
