Greenville County is a county located in the state of South Carolina, in the United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 525,534, making it the most populous county in the state. The county seat is Greenville. The county was created in 1786.

History

Greenville County was established in 1786, following the American Revolutionary War. The area was originally inhabited by the Cherokee people before European settlers arrived. The county was named after Nathanael Greene, a major general in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 795 square miles (2,060 km²), of which 785 square miles (2,030 km²) is land and 10 square miles (26 km²) (1.3%) is water.

As of the 2020 census, there were 525,534 people, 206,522 households, and 137,000 families residing in the county. The population density was 669 people per square mile (258/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 70.3% White, 18.1% Black or African American, 2.1% Asian, and 9.5% from other races.

Greenville County has a diverse economy with a strong presence in manufacturing, healthcare, and education. Major employers include Michelin, General Electric, and the Greenville Health System.

Education

The county is served by the Greenville County School District, which is the largest school district in the state. Higher education institutions in the county include Furman University, Bob Jones University, and Greenville Technical College.
