Gruet Winery

Gruet Winery is a family-owned winery located in Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was founded in 1984 by Gilbert Gruet, a Champagne producer from Bethon, France. The winery specializes in producing sparkling wines using the traditional Champagne method.

History

Gilbert Gruet, along with his wife Danielle, moved to the United States in the late 1980s with the intention of finding the perfect location to produce high-quality sparkling wines. After an extensive search, they discovered the ideal terroir in the high desert of New Mexico. The unique climate and soil conditions of the region were reminiscent of the Champagne region in France, making it an ideal location for sparkling wine production.

Vineyards

Gruet Winery owns and operates several vineyards in New Mexico, including the original vineyard located just outside of Albuquerque. The vineyards are situated at elevations ranging from 4,300 to 6,000 feet, which contributes to the unique character of the grapes grown in the region. The winery primarily cultivates Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, which are the traditional varieties used in Champagne production.

Winemaking

Gruet Winery follows the traditional Champagne method, also known as the méthode champenoise, to produce their sparkling wines. This labor-intensive process involves a secondary fermentation in the bottle, which creates the characteristic bubbles in the wine. The winery also employs a minimum of 18 months of aging on the lees, resulting in complex and well-rounded flavors.

Awards and Recognition

Over the years, Gruet Winery has received numerous awards and accolades for their sparkling wines. Their wines have been recognized both nationally and internationally for their exceptional quality and craftsmanship. Some notable awards include the Double Gold Medal at the San Francisco International Wine Competition and the Best of Show Sparkling Wine at the New Mexico State Fair Wine Competition.
