Hannah Steinberg
Hannah Steinberg (1924-2019) was a British psychopharmacologist and psychologist known for her significant contributions to the field of psychopharmacology. She was a pioneer in the study of drug addiction and the effects of psychoactive drugs on behaviour.
Early Life and Education
Hannah Steinberg was born in 1924 in Budapest, Hungary. She moved to the United Kingdom in 1939, just before the outbreak of World War II. She studied at the University of London, where she received her Bachelor's degree in Psychology in 1947 and her Doctorate in 1952.
Career
Steinberg began her career at the National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) in London, where she worked with Wilfred Noyce and Albert Neuberger. She later moved to the University of London's Institute of Psychiatry (now the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience), where she established the Unit for Research in Animal Behavior.
Steinberg's research focused on the effects of psychoactive drugs on behaviour. She was particularly interested in the behavioural aspects of drug addiction. Her work in this area was instrumental in the development of new treatments for drug addiction.
In addition to her research, Steinberg was also a dedicated teacher and mentor. She was a professor of Psychopharmacology at the University of London and served as the president of the British Association for Psychopharmacology from 1980 to 1982.
Legacy
Steinberg's contributions to the field of psychopharmacology have had a lasting impact. Her research has helped to shape our understanding of drug addiction and the effects of psychoactive drugs on behaviour. She is remembered not only for her groundbreaking research, but also for her dedication to teaching and mentoring the next generation of researchers.
