Harvest festival
Harvest Festival is a celebration that occurs around the time of the main harvest of a given region. Given the differences in climate and crops around the world, harvest festivals can be found at various times throughout the world. Harvest festivals typically feature feasting, both family and public, with foods that are drawn from crops that come to maturity around the time of the festival.
History
Harvest festivals have been celebrated for many centuries, even before the Middle Ages. The primary purpose of these gatherings was to celebrate the fruits of harvest and to give thanks for a fruitful season. In many cultures, it is a significant event that includes music, dancing, and games, along with the feasting.
Harvest Festivals Around the World
North America
In North America, the most well-known harvest festival is Thanksgiving, celebrated in both the United States and Canada. This holiday traces its origins to settlers in the early 17th century, who would celebrate a good harvest with a feast, often inviting local indigenous tribes who had taught them how to cultivate the land.
Europe
In the United Kingdom, the Harvest Festival is traditionally celebrated on the Sunday nearest the Harvest Moon. This is the full moon that occurs closest to the autumn equinox (about Sept. 23). In two out of three years, the Harvest Moon comes in September, but in some years it occurs in October.
Asia
In Asia, one of the most significant harvest festivals is the Mid-Autumn Festival in China, which is held on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunar calendar with a full moon at night. It is a time to enjoy the successful reaping of rice and wheat with food offerings made in honor of the moon.
Significance
Harvest festivals are significant as they acknowledge the critical role of agriculture in society. They are a time to give thanks for the abundance of crops and the hard work of those who grow them. They also serve as a reminder of our dependence on the natural world for sustenance.
