Hawaii (hə-WY-ee)

Hawaii (Template:IPA-en) is the 50th and most recent state to have joined the United States, having received statehood on August 21, 1959. Hawaii is the only U.S. state located in Oceania and the only one composed entirely of islands.

Etymology

The name 'Hawaii' is derived from the Proto-Polynesian *hawaiki, meaning 'place of the gods' or 'homeland'. The word is cognate with Maori Hawaiki, Rarotongan 'avaiki, and Samoan avaiki, referring to the underworld in these cultures.
