Henry Lomb (November 24, 1828 – June 13, 1908) was a German-American optician and philanthropist who co-founded Bausch & Lomb, one of the largest suppliers of eye health products in the world. His contributions to the optical industry and the city of Rochester, New York, have left a lasting legacy.

Early Life

Henry Lomb was born in Burghaun, Hesse-Kassel (now Germany), on November 24, 1828. Seeking better opportunities, he emigrated to the United States in 1849, eventually settling in Rochester, New York.

Career

In Rochester, Lomb initially worked in various trades before meeting John Jacob Bausch, a fellow German immigrant with an interest in optics. In 1853, Lomb invested his savings to help Bausch start a small optical shop, which grew into the globally recognized firm Bausch & Lomb. Lomb's business acumen and Bausch's technical skills proved to be a successful combination, allowing the company to innovate and expand, especially in the production of high-quality optical glass and precision instruments.

Philanthropy and Legacy

Beyond his business achievements, Henry Lomb was known for his philanthropic efforts. He was deeply involved in community service and contributed to various causes in Rochester. His legacy includes the establishment of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), to which he was a significant benefactor. Lomb's commitment to education and community development has been commemorated in various ways throughout the city.

Death and Memorials

Henry Lomb passed away on June 13, 1908, in Rochester. His contributions to the optical industry and his philanthropic work have been honored through various memorials, including the naming of the Lomb Memorial Drive at RIT. His impact on the community and the field of optics continues to be felt to this day.
