The House of Windsor is the reigning royal house of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth realms. The dynasty was established on 17 July 1917 by King George V, who changed the name from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha due to anti-German sentiment during World War I.

History

The House of Windsor was founded by George V, who was the grandson of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The name change was a response to the strong anti-German feelings prevalent in the UK during World War I. The name "Windsor" was chosen after Windsor Castle, a royal residence.

Reigns

  • George V (1910–1936): The first monarch of the House of Windsor, George V led the country through World War I and the early interwar period.
  • Edward VIII (1936): His reign was short-lived due to his abdication to marry Wallis Simpson, an American divorcée.
  • George VI (1936–1952): Known for his leadership during World War II, George VI was the father of Queen Elizabeth II.
  • Elizabeth II (1952–2022): The longest-reigning current monarch, Elizabeth II saw significant changes in the British Empire and the Commonwealth.
  • Charles III (2022–present): The current head of the House of Windsor.
