Huchen

Description

Habitat and Distribution

The species is native to the Danube River Basin, which spans several countries including Austria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, Slovakia, and Slovenia.

Diet

Reproduction

Huchen spawn in the spring, usually in April or May. The female lays her eggs in a nest, or redd, that she digs in the gravel of the river bottom. After fertilization, the eggs develop into larvae, which remain in the redd until they are able to swim and feed on their own.

Conservation Status

The Huchen is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to habitat loss, pollution, and overfishing. Efforts are being made to conserve the species through habitat restoration and the establishment of protected areas.
