Hugh Bentall

Hugh Bentall (28 April 1920 – 9 September 2012) was a pioneering British cardiac surgeon and academic known for his contributions to the development of cardiothoracic surgery. He was instrumental in advancing surgical techniques for heart valve replacement and coronary artery bypass surgery.

Early Life and Education

Hugh Bentall was born in London, England. He attended St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College, where he completed his medical degree. Bentall's early interest in surgery led him to pursue further training in the field of cardiothoracic surgery.

Career

Bentall began his career at Hammersmith Hospital, where he worked under the mentorship of renowned surgeon Russell Brock. During his time at Hammersmith, Bentall developed a keen interest in cardiac surgery, which was then an emerging field.

Bentall is best known for the development of the Bentall procedure, a surgical technique for the repair of the aortic root and aortic valve. This procedure involves the replacement of the aortic valve, aortic root, and ascending aorta with a composite graft.
