Human Genome Organisation

The Human Genome Organisation (pronounced: /ˈhjuːmən ˈdʒiːnoʊm ɔːrɡənaɪˈzeɪʃən/), also known as HUGO, is a global body that promotes research into the genome – the complete set of genetic material within an organism. The organisation was established in 1989 to facilitate the collaborative efforts of scientists working on the Human Genome Project.

Etymology

The term "Human Genome Organisation" is derived from the words "human", referring to the species Homo sapiens, "genome", which is the complete set of genes or genetic material present in a cell or organism, and "organisation", indicating a structured group of people with a particular purpose.

History

HUGO was established in 1989 during the early stages of the Human Genome Project, an international scientific research project with the goal of determining the base pairs that make up human DNA and identifying and mapping all of the genes of the human genome. The organisation was created to foster collaboration among researchers and to ensure that the information generated by the Human Genome Project would be made freely available to the scientific community.

Functions

HUGO's main function is to promote research into the human genome and to facilitate the sharing of data and resources among researchers. The organisation also plays a key role in setting standards for genome nomenclature and in promoting ethical research practices.
