Hunter College, officially known as Hunter College of the City University of New York (CUNY), is a public university located in New York City. It is one of the oldest public colleges in the United States and a flagship institution of the CUNY system. Hunter College offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs across five distinct schools: Arts and Sciences, Education, Social Work, Nursing, and Health Professions.

History

Hunter College was founded in 1870 as a women's college by Irish immigrant and social reformer Thomas Hunter. Originally named the Female Normal and High School, its primary purpose was to prepare young women to become teachers. The institution underwent several name changes, becoming Hunter College in 1914 in honor of its founder. It opened its doors to male students in the late 1940s.

Campus

The main campus is located in the Lenox Hill neighborhood on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. It features a mix of historic and modern buildings, including the landmarked Thomas Hunter Hall. The college also operates additional campuses: the Brookdale Health Sciences Campus on the East Side of Manhattan, the Silberman School of Social Work in East Harlem, and the School of Education's campus in the Bronx.
