Hyperfocus is a term used in the field of psychology to describe an intense form of mental concentration or absorption in which the individual becomes fully engrossed in a task, to the exclusion of all other thoughts and actions.

The term "hyperfocus" is derived from the Greek word "hyper" meaning "over" or "beyond", and the Latin word "focus" meaning "hearth" or "center of activity".

Definition

Hyperfocus is a state of intense concentration that can last for hours or even days. It is often experienced by individuals with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), but can also occur in other conditions such as autism and bipolar disorder. During a hyperfocus episode, the individual may become so absorbed in a task that they lose awareness of their surroundings and may neglect basic needs such as eating and sleeping.
