IL18BP
IL18BP is a protein that in humans is encoded by the IL18BP gene. It is a naturally occurring inhibitor of the proinflammatory cytokine IL18. IL18BP forms a complex with IL18, thus preventing the latter from binding to its receptor and mediating inflammatory responses.
Function
The protein encoded by this gene is an inhibitor of the proinflammatory cytokine IL18. The encoded protein binds to IL18, prevents the binding of IL18 to its receptor, and thus inhibits IL18-induced IFN-gamma production. This protein is constitutively expressed and secreted in mononuclear cells.
Clinical significance
Alterations in the balance between IL18 and IL18BP are associated with diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, and psoriasis.
Interactions
IL18BP has been shown to interact with IL18.
