Ibandronic Acid

Ibandronic Acid (pronounced as eye-ban-dro-nik as-id) is a potent bisphosphonate medication used in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and metastasis-associated skeletal fractures in people with cancer. It is also known by its brand name, Boniva.

Etymology

The term "Ibandronic Acid" is derived from its chemical structure. The "ibandronate" part of the name is a combination of the chemical elements it contains: iodine (I), barium (Ba), and nitrogen (N). The "ic acid" suffix indicates that it is an acid.

Usage

Ibandronic Acid is primarily used to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It works by slowing bone loss to help maintain strong bones and reduce the risk of broken bones (fractures). Ibandronic Acid belongs to a class of drugs known as bisphosphonates.
