Iloilo City (Hiligaynon: Dakbanwa sang Iloilo) is a highly urbanized city in the Western Visayas region of the Philippines. It is the capital city of the province of Iloilo and is known for its rich cultural heritage, historical landmarks, and vibrant festivals.
History
Iloilo City was founded in 1581 by Spanish colonizers. It became a significant center for trade and commerce during the Spanish colonial period. The city was officially granted cityhood on July 16, 1937.
Geography
Iloilo City is located on the southeastern tip of Panay Island, bordered by the Iloilo Strait to the south. The city covers a total area of 78.34 square kilometers and is divided into seven districts: Jaro, La Paz, Mandurriao, Molo, Arevalo, City Proper, and Lapuz.

As of the 2020 census, Iloilo City has a population of 457,626 people. The city is predominantly inhabited by the Hiligaynon people, and the primary language spoken is Hiligaynon, also known as Ilonggo. English and Filipino are also widely used.
