Industrial Light & Magic
Industrial Light & Magic (ILM) is an American motion picture visual effects company that was founded in May 1975 by George Lucas. It is a division of the film production company Lucasfilm, which Lucas founded, and was created when Lucas began production of the film Star Wars. ILM originated in Van Nuys, California, then later moved to San Rafael in 1978, and since 2005, it has been based in the Presidio of San Francisco.
History
The formation of ILM was for the purpose of creating the original visual effects for Star Wars (1977). This innovation was showcased in the 1982 film Tron, which was one of the first films to use computer-generated imagery (CGI). ILM has also developed several proprietary software systems, including the RenderMan rendering system which has become a standard in the visual effects industry.
Divisions
ILM consists of several divisions, including ILMxLAB, which focuses on the creation of interactive entertainment and virtual reality experiences. Another division, Skywalker Sound, specializes in audio post-production.

ILM has received numerous awards for its work, including 15 Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects and 30 Scientific and Technical Awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
Impact on the Film Industry

Recent Projects
In recent years, ILM has continued to work on high-profile film projects, including the Star Wars sequels and spin-offs, the Marvel Cinematic Universe films, and various entries in the Jurassic World series. The company has also expanded its services to include visual effects for streaming television series, such as The Mandalorian.
Future
As the film industry continues to evolve with new technologies like augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR), ILM remains at the forefront of visual effects innovation.
